transfection efficiency - how to calculate it? (Aug/25/2006 )

hello,
I have come across the term transfection efficiency. I have following questions regarding this:
1) how to calculate it
2) Can transfection efficiency be calculated of fluroscent proteins only?
3) can it be calculated for transient transfection also?
I know that for stable transfection it can be calculated.
can you clarify my doubts

We calculate the total number of cells, lets say in a 40x field and then count the number of fluorescent labelled cells. This gives u the tranfection efficiency, either for transient transfection or viral infection.

For stable transfection, all ur cells should b glowing if it has a fluorescent protien. Therefore, the question of transfection efficiency doesnt arise.
