Dog that eats lawn grass, is it harmful? - (Aug/05/2006 )
My dog eats lawn grass and then vomits. After reading the dogs can't eat onion postings it made wonder if the grass could give her health problems?
Mine chews on grass too, although he doesnt vomit. I think as long as you dont put chemicals on the lawn it will be ok. In fact you can buy eatable grass for doggies/cats at pet stores. Your dog may react to physical stimulation from glass leaves, not chemical.
my dog seems to eat more grass if her stomach's a little upset. perhaps his food is not the best for him? some dogs have a hard time digesting different types of protein...but if all he does is yack every now and then, I bet he's fine...if you are concerned, perhaps it would be good to ask your vet about recommendations? perhaps he has a mild allergy to something in his food..but switching food is another can of worms too if his stomach's sensitive
good luck!
[D]ogs may eat grass when they have an upset stomach in order to cause vomiting. "The grass will bind with the offending material. Then the grass acts as an irritant and causes the dog to vomit, bringing up the poisonous material at the same time," says Celia Feiler, DVM, of Winston Veterinary Hospital in North Carolina.

Cool. I did not know that. Thanks.
My puppy dog eats anything, fallen leaves, grass, branches, just for fun, I guess.
My dog ate grass when he had constipation.

Sometimes dogs eat such stuff when something (nutrient, mineral??) is missing in the food. Especially droppings of rabbits/hares are favoured. My dog loved them and was quite greedy. I think they are still rich of several ingredients which helps dogs for digestion and supply of different nutrients or minerals.
this is from peteducation.com:
"Q. Why do dogs eat grass?
A. Dogs commonly eat grass, and there are several explanations that have been offered for this behavior. One, wild canids (e.g., wolves and fox) eat all of an animal when they catch it. Since they eat many herbivores (plant-eating animals), they end up eating a lot of grasses and plants that were in the intestines of these animals. In addition, they have been known to eat certain berries and other plant material. Dogs then, may eat grass because, in reality, it is a normal part of their diet.
Many times, dogs will vomit after eating grass. Did they eat grass to make them vomit? Or did they vomit because they ate grass? It is a mystery, but it seems that some dogs may eat vegetation when they have an upset stomach.
The third reason - they just like it. Some dogs have certain species of grass or plant material that they will search out and eat. We know a beagle who can pick raspberries faster than his owner.
In any case, grass eating is basically a normal behavior, and is not of concern unless your dog does it excessively.

I searched around a little, and the consensus seems to be that it's not actually known, but there are many theories. I can tell you, in regards to the beagle that picks raspberries...my little girl will clean sugar-snap pea vines from as high as she can reach to the ground, if you leave her in the garden alone too long...also likes green beans and carrots, although she doesn't dig up the carrots herself...and cooked squash. so apparently there's nothing harmful about it
I once knew a lady who insisted her dog be vegetarian/almost vegan. I think that was a little nuts, the dog was rail-thin and always looked and acted very hungry...but there are many theories
should report it to animal protection agency !!
I felt sorry for the dog, but the lady did nothing illegal.
