Is CaCl2 autoclavable? - (Jul/31/2006 )
Does anyone know whether CaCl2 can be autoclaved? I've seen protocols where it was, but some protocols require that it be filter steralized and added seperately.

i am filter sterilizing CaCl2

I sterile filter CaCl2. Never tried to autoclave. Bocz thats what I was told from my mentors.

I autoclave my CaCl2, will that affect the results?

i always autoclaved my CaCl2 when making competant cells, never had a problem always got competant cells, just remember to work steril and keep the CaCl2 on ice if you are making competant cells

i think it's just a solution like all solns, we did this i remember for tissue culture for sterilization

Yeah, I thought it would be like any other solution, but it seems as though it is treated differently. Can any people who use filter sterilization explain why it shouldn't be autoclaved?

May be there is some extra reagent add to CaCl2 and this extra regent may precipitate when autoclaved.

there isnt really a reason why one method is better than the other, like most things in a lab, these things are the way they are become someone before you did it that way.
in general though filter sterilization is quicker than autoclaving, but the autoclave is easier, so it depends on what tyoe of researcher you are i.e. i never worried about sitting around for an hour or so waiting for the autoclave to finish, but then again a was a bit lazy....

Hi
We always autoclave Cacl2 in our lab and it works well.
