i would like to know if there are any other assays apart from MTT to check cell proliferation and viability.

You could use an SRB assay or Alamar Blue (which is my preferred one).

Or just buy a commercially available kit. There are hundreds.

BTW if you'd typed in cell proliferation assay into Google you'd have got your answer a lot quicker.
