Heat inactivated FBS vs gamma irrated FBS - (Jun/10/2006 )

HELLO EVERYBODY,
can anyone tell me , IS heat inactivated FBS & gamma irrated FBS , samething.
can we use them interchangably.

No, they are not the same. Heat inactivation will inactivate complement in the serum, while gamma irradiation will simply make the serum sterile. Heat inactivation will not sterilize -- it is heat inactivated at 55C for 1/2 hour. Often commercially available heat inactivated serum is also sterile, but that is through a different process (sterile filtration or irradiation).

agree with phage 434 and would add that both of them may not be interchangeable
For example, infections are better done in heat inactivated serum than gamma irradied serum only
