glycerol - sterilisation (Aug/07/2002 )
Can you sterilise glycerol by autoclaving? If not why?
-sam-
you can do it, but eg. for bacterial freezing stocks it is not necessary.
-snowman-
Glycerol solutions intended for preparation of electro-competent bacteria should be filtered rather than autoclaved for higher transformation efficiency. Glycerol will start to decompose to ethylene aldehyde at its boiling point of 182°C.
