organ transplantation - (Apr/28/2006 )
hi, I would like to ask what requirements are needed for universal donors and universal recipients for organ transplantation?
At my knowledge there is no universal donor for transplantation contrary to blood transfusion where 0- is universal donor.
A and B are antigens, O means there is none of them, and AB there is both. If you are AB, you won't make antibodies against A or B. you are universal donor.
If you are O, you have none of the antigens, no antibodies will be product against your blood, you are universal donor
For transplantation you need HLA compatibility. HLA molecules are involved in the foreign cell recognition. every body has HLA molecules, they are quite different. That's why you need to get as much compatibility between donor and recevor as possible.( 100 % compatiblility is not possible, that's why recevors receive immunosuppression therapy to increase the tolerance toward the graft.)
what I think is that as if the donor organs or tissue don't have any surface molecules like MHC, they can be universal donor
if the recipient doesn't have thymus to develop T cells, then she/he may be an universal recipient for the transplant.

hi
this is part of reason why nude mice are used for transplantation researches.
