Concerted evolution - (Apr/25/2006 )

Concerted evolution (horizontal evolution, coincidental evolution) is the tendency of the different genes in a gene family or cluster to evolve together, which means that each gene locus in the family comes to have the same genetic variant.
Do you know the evidence that are used to suggest that concerted evolution occurs?
What are the alternative hypothesis refuting concerted evolution?

smells like a homework question.

google and pubmed

you might also look here.

i have to run now, but i'll get back you later.

Great...now I am suspected to give you my homework to do... blink.gif
Well I will try to ask more accurate question to avoid this assumption.
I am wondering about the evidences which are used to suggest that concerted evolution occurs and which allow to distinguish between the sequences which diverged recently by duplication from the sequences that evolved in concert....
Any idea?
I've found information that phylogenetic analysis of repetitive sequences should reveal cohesive grouping of sequences within a species if they undergo concerted evolution....so this is first evidence which I could use to distinguish between these alternatives....

better question biggrin.gif

There are quite a few review papers on this in pub med.
I've linked you to the review page, ther eare only 4 papers, and one of them talks about the evidence for biased concerted evolution.
I'll PM you a really good acticle on this type of thing.
there is also a book on molecular evolution, which is available throught google book . this might also provide some help.
