Why use PBS before trypsinizing cells - (Jan/26/2006 )

Hi,

I have a question about PBS, what is the reason to use PBS before using trypsin? Is this for washing the old media from the cells?

Wash away medium because medium contains serum which inhibitis trypsin.

we use serum-free medium; we still wash with PBS prior to trypsinization to make sure cell wastes and spent media are removed

i did heard that medium contains too much salts for trypsin activity. (trypsin is generally in a EDTA solution)
