Pronounciation of Hoechst - (Dec/21/2005 )

Pages: 1 2 Next

How do you pronounce Hoechst (the nuclear stain)? I've asked a few people and everyone tells me something different. Since I'm using it on my cells I'm thinking at some point I'm going to have to give a talk about my results and would like to be able to pronounce Hoechst properly.

It's pronounced "33342" or "33258".

I have heard many people pronouncing it as "Hookhst". We in our lab pronounce as "Heekhst".

I tried to translate it in phonetic symbols (take a look on IPA hp...), and this is what I've obtained
/hoexst/
but I'm not sure about the vowels translation...
actually it happens that the german form "ö" in international text is written "oe" to help readers to pronounce it. You can find here
http://www.germanfortravellers.com/learn/voc/index.html
an example of that particular sound in the german for "beautiful": in fact "schön" is the same of "schoen"
...any german speaking to confirm?????

Have a look at

http://dict.leo.org/

it`s a english/ german dictionary. You should get the right pronounciation there.

if you have a sound card, most online dictionaries will pronounce a word for you, if you can find Hoescht

we have yet another pronunciation, "HOSHT" with a long O (like 'host' but make the sss sound an sh sound)

Thanks. That site is great. I tried to look on english dictionary websites for the pronounciation but none of them had Hoechst. The english/german website is quite helpful though. My ancestors would be disgraced that I can't pronounce a german word being that I'm half german. So sad.

well, for me as a german... i'd agree ila! (i also pronounce it like the german ' höchst')

-speedy-

I have another one...

"Hext" as in text...
