DNA precipitation directly from serum - Is it possible direct precipitation of DNA from serum (Nov/11/2005 )

Hi guys,
I would like to know if anybody has experience in precipitating DNA directly from serum ? Is the standard Na acetate/ethanol precip. would work and with what yield. Probably the DNA will be very dirty but I just want to concentrate bacterial DNA in human serum for PCR without isolation.

Thank you in advance

Hi,

Yes it is possible to extract DNA from serum, i have used Na Acetate quite effectively, with good yields and purity. However in your case, it seems that you must be sure that you are getting the bacterial DNA - that might require some fine tuning.

A not however, for some reason removing albumin from the serum before DNA extraction usually gives better results.

All the best!!
