simultaneous extraction of nucleic acids and proteins - (Apr/24/2009 )
Hello all, I am new at this so please be patient...
Is it possible to simultaneously extract protein and RNA from the same group of cells? i.e. can I acquire a protein sample and an RNA sample from the same group of cells, if so what is the most appropriate technique to get the highest yield with the best quality? Can you recommend a kit I can buy from within the UK?

It is possible, Trizol reagent from Invitrogen claims to be able to do RNA, DNA and protein from the same sample. However, I have tried RNA and protein using this system without much success in the protein side of the extraction.
In my experience, you are much better off separating your sample into pieces and extracting separately from each bit.

Thanks Bob1, I we used Trizol, I was afraid of damaging my RNA in the process of extracting protein as well. Looks Like I will have to split the samples.

Sorry bob1. have you tried this extracting also microRNA? do you think the sample should be split into 3 in that case?
