Take a look at NIH's microbiome project. Based on the concept that sees of bodies as composed of both human and microbial cells (more of the former than the latter) it explores the collective dynamic.

Its not only humans where we find out more and more about "microbiomes" and their importance.
E.g. there are fungi which cannot produce toxins (and spores) without bacteria Nature 437; 884

Thanks geberg.. - interesting! Even more so as Burkholderia has been shown to both inhibit and be inhibitted by fungi.
