Dissolving a protein abstract - (Feb/27/2016 )

My boss handed me a protein extract powder from vegetables. I assume it's spray dried.. I assume you can't just add buffer and stir 😊? I also assume most of these proteins are knackered and simply will never return to solution.

Maybe i need some methods? Any help would be appreciated

if this is a protein extract and not just a homogenate then you should first try to suspend it in buffer. keep in mind that some proteins require certain conditions to resolubilize.

i'm not sure what you mean by "spray dried". we usually dry protein extracts with a lyophilizer or "speed-vac".

some may be permanently denatured but most should be soluble.

Thanks..at an industrial level, spray drying/drum drying is carried out. Also as a vegetable extract, there are I'm sure plenty impurities such as sugars. I imagine many proteins are knackered but....I don't know. There must be a better way. Maybe urea to start

urea will denature (somewhat reversibly) the proteins.

i would try without denaturing agents first. then try them on anything that remains insoluble.

Maybe you could ask your boss directly, and what he want you to do with that protein powder.
