Submitting a review manuscript with more than 200 refs - (Nov/24/2015 )
We have written a review manuscript with more than 220 references. My field is virology and the manuscript is about new advances in generation of recombinant viruses. So far all the Q1 journals that we have checked publish max 100 refs. What to do? Publish as a book chapter?
I recently came across a review article with a very large number of references. In the reference list they included the primary or most important references, and then in a supplementary materials they had additional references.
Otherwise if in doubt call or email the editor of your preferred journals directly. They may be able to make an exception or suggest ways they can accommodate a large reference list.
I emailed a Q2 journal. They said they need to see the manuscript first. If I can't find a Q1 I will submit to Q2.
