Proper source of ampicillin for e.coli growth medium? - (Jun/15/2015 )

Ok, so I want to modify some e.coli, and need an agar containing ampicillin in order to separate the wheat from the chaff. However, those pre-made kits from say, Bio-Rad - are incredibly expensive.

Would it be possible to make a regular growth medium from food grade agar and adding in ampicillin from another source, such as ampicillin capsules for fighting bacterial infections in pigeons?

Sincerely, N00b.

Yes it should be possible. You generally need the amp to be between 50 and 100 ug/ml of medium for selection. Note that you need to cool the medium to 55 (celsius) or less before adding the amp or you will inactivate it.

Thanks Bob! Once again you come to my rescue. :)

I will try this out asap.
