Routine medical tests on mice before delivery to lab - (Apr/04/2015 )

A colleague bought some nude mice and they all died on day 2 after delivery to lab. She was puzzled why because the condition of the room was standard. She did a PCR test on their liver and found out all of them had MHV virus infection. She told the company but they don't take responsibility and say it must have been from our own mishandling.

Therefore she wants to establish a routine test procedure for mice they buy from companies to not have the same problem again. What does she need to do? Or what tests the companies do on mice before they send them to customers?

depends on the type of mouse, are they germfree? or?

MHV is very contagious.

It seems weird they would get it in your lab and day 2 days later.

Others animals there that might be sick or?

Actually I am not really expert in mice work. I just know that she had nude mice. I don't know if they were germfree or came with a test result to prove they are healthy. I don't even know if they give such report before delivery. They didn't have other animals in the lab.

You can order all kinds of mice in terms of "being germfree" so depending on what she got, she might got mice that were not checked at all for certain diseases.

Its hard to tell like this of course.

No other animals in the lab? Eum, makes me wonder about how they got it, its likely they were indeed sick when they arrived.
