Smeary bands in gel electrophoresis - (Dec/22/2014 )

I have a new sets of primers, so am checking them with conventional PCR before proceeding with my work. When running my PCR products  on 2% agarose gel, I have got smeary bands even for the DNA ladder. What could be the reason for this?

Did you accidentally make the gel with water instead of  buffer?

No, I used 1% TAE buffer to prepare the gel and to run the gel as well

I figured out my mistake, it was the DNA volume which is too high. I have got sharp bands when decreasing the total volume of DNA added to the wells.
