Cell culture contamination - (Dec/05/2014 )

Hallo all

In my lab we are trying to do macrophages primary culture. Briefly,  We collected the blood (in asspetic environment), did the differential separation with ficoll , we took monocites and plated them in medium.

24 h hour later we notice a contamination that looks like bastonetes moving around, but the medium is not turved at all.

Does anyone have ideia what should be this contamination?

Thanks a lot

From a quick google, it seems that Bastonetes means rod/tube shaped things - is this right? If so, these could be bacilli (e.g. lactobacillus species), but they could also be a number of other things, including cell debris (from dying/dead cells) or various forms of fungal (probably yeast) contamination.

Are they actively moving or is it just Brownian motion?
