live cell culture transport in 6 well plate - (Nov/01/2014 )

I am new to cell culture and I have to transport my cells between labs in the city in a 6 well plate, all what I found was about transporting it in a flask. I need your help.

I'd use one of those plastic sealable food containers (pre-sprayed with ethanol first of course).

thanks blixx, but only that without filling it with medium or seal it with parafilm

This depends strongly on your local legislation regarding transport of biological goods. In most countries there are extremely strong penalties for transporting biological goods incorrectly.  Usually transporting requires first sealing the primary container (e.g. using parafilm) then sealing in an "unbreakable" container which contains enough absorbent material (tissue paper, vermiculite etc.) to absorb the total volume of the liquid in the primary container. Lastly they are usually required to be contained in another container (e.g. polystyrene box) also filled with enough absorbent material.

However, transporting cells in a 6 well plate is usually a bad idea, depending on how you are transporting (car, walking, plane...etc?.) and how long it is going to take (minutes? hours, days?). The reason for this is that if you have different things (cell lines, treatments etc) in each well, there is a good chance that the medium will slop around and cross-contaminate other wells. If you are transporting for purposes of an experiment, it might be better to find out if there is any possibility of the experiment coming to you, at least in part, or if there is something that can be done to seal the vessel appropriately. An agar overlay might work in some cases.

If you are sending these cells to another lab for them to grow, put them in a flask, fill it with medium and then transport... it works, which is why you don't find information for other types of vessel.

Thanks bob1, but unfortunately I have to use the 6 well plate.

In that case just wrap the plate in parafilm and transport it very carefully!

thanks a lot bob1
