How to differentiate Enterobacteriace on Gram Stain? - (Aug/25/2014 )
Hi.....I just wanted to know some tips from those having experience with Enterobacteriace. Please give some practical tips for identification of various G -ve rods on blood agar and Gram Stained slide under microscope. I'm interested in E. coli, Salmonella, Proteus, Klebsiella, Enterobactor etc. Does smell of colonies on BA is another differentiating feature?
Thanks
Nadeen
It is difficult to differentiate among the members of Enterobacteriace on the basis of gram Stain as all of them will appear as pink/red color rods. Usually E.coli appear as thin long rods, Salmonella short rods, but this is not a confirm test as morphology of bacteria changes with the type of strain., Best is carbohydrate fermentation test which helps to differentiate. moreover many small kits are available in Hi media
You can get a kit... I use MicrogenTM GnA+B-ID System it helps a lot and it is easy to use.

A colilert kit might give you a fast confirmation but just enough to confirm you have something from the enterobacteriaceae.
