Selling kits and reagents (feel free to move elsewhere) - (Jul/18/2014 )

Sorry, but I don't know where this would fit. The woman who runs the lab where I work for has retired (but will be around the for the next year to accommodate a grad student, and I still work here as a lab tech doing projects for other persons in the dept.). We have a number of items (e.g. kits, reagents) that have not been used nor will they be. Does anyone have any experience with some type of an exchange to sell them to others at a discounted price. I think it would be sensible to have one at a campus/city level to prevent waste, but we do not. Ebay is the first thing that pops to mind for this kind of thing, but I was wondering if there might be a better way more tailored to people who would use such items?

P.S. I realize that using PO numbers to pay for things could definitely complicate such transactions.

P.P.S. I assume it's not illegal to sell them at a reduced price if you've already bought them from the company at full price.

LabX used to do this sort of thing, but you would need to contact them to find out exactly how it works.  I think people have sold lab equipment on Ebay and similar sites before, so that could be a good option.

At a guess, most people probably wouldn't buy unused kits off you unless they are in the same locality (i.e. city/university locality), as buying new from a company gives some guarantee that they will work.

That looks like a great site, for equipment. I realize the added difficultly anytime solutions are involved. Local/personal would be best, I agree, but unfortunately molecular biology is not very big at our university. I will have to ask around a bit, because it would be silly to let things that are viable go to waste.

I know right offhand the following we have (unused, unopened) one or more of…

- miRneasy Mini Kit

- DNAzol Reagent

- The following from “Wizard DNA isolation kit”: Protein Precipitation solution (probably just KOAc), RNase solution, Nuclei Lysis solution (SDS, Tris, EDTA and NaCl I think), Cell Lysis solution (not sure as we never used this… I think it’s for blood samples)

If anyone is interested let me know with a PM. Not only will the price be significantly discounted, but I would certainly be willing to await payment until after the item arrived at its destination, or even after it is successfully used (and I will address any Qs about age and storage conditions).

P.S. I will use my university email address... nothing shady here; these items didn't "fall off of a truck".
