Transgenic mice in Europe? - (Dec/27/2013 )
Dear all, Happy Holidays!
Does anybody know from where in Europe could be purchased transgenic mice ?
If we buy......let`s say one couple, are we allowed to breed them if our Institution has a common experimental animals facility?
Actually, do we buy them or we produce them......I mean we make a collaboration with someone who knows how to do it?
I guess, the Laboratory of this skilled person sould have some allowance to create such organisms, shouldn`t it?
Thank you!

Just some examples where you can buy mice.
I am not sure what you are asking, is this a task for school or?

Hello, Pito.
I know nothing about Transgenic mice, only a bit about how they are made - that`s why I make these maybe silly questions; I just don`t have the experience.
Thank you for your reply
you are going to work with them? or?
anyway to answer your questions:
you are allowed to breed them, but you need to correct facilities to do so. The rule might be different from country to country.
You can buy them or you might need to make them yourself. This depends on what kind of mutation you need.
and yes you need certain certificates to work with them. Check the felasa requirements.
Yes, I found one model which seems to be suitable for something that I plan....and I just collect information from everywhere I can. As I said, I don`t have an experience with transgenic organisms and nobody around to guide me.
But is there already a facility where they keep animals?
You are not allowed to just buy mice and keep them in a box in the lab....
E, of course, we have a facility to keep experimental animals, with all necessary licences.
I was just wondering if some special authorization is needed......

Thanks a lot!
do you work at a university? if so: they must know the rules and would be able to guide you. When working with genetically modified organisms, its more difficult and there are stricter rules! So make sure you follow them.
No, I am working in Institute and here for sure there is nobody who knows about this kind of job.
As I said, I have an idea and I started to search how to make it reality, if possible.
Thank you very much, now I know at least from where to start. :-)
