Potential conflict of interest? - (Aug/16/2013 )
Hi,
I am hired by a private company to plan an integrated pest control management programme, and they wish to publish the result IF the outcome is good. However, since I am hire by them to conduct the experiment, and i am currently not attached to any research lab or university (since I've graduated), this imo would be a great conflict of interest. Will this affect the chances of this study getting published? And, can we published it since because the PI (which is me) is not of any research lab?? IF it would affect the publication, what can we do to prevent that before we carry out the experiment? Finding a PI with academic/research background?
No, publishing a paper does not necessarily need an affiliation of the author. You can find many examples in journal articles in which the only thing attached to the author is author's home address. Whether you need to let the company know is a different matter.

Its very rare.. but sometimes it does happen.
But most are just affiliated with a researchfacility.
Here are some examples in which the author does not have affiliation
Search George E Parris http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=parris+ge PMID: 20031335 19833446
and this one http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22533413
You can put your private company as your affiliation, and you should state the potential conflict of interest. It is the rule. As a reviewer, I do not think that it highly affects my decision on the paper if the methods and results look reliable.
