Long-Term Culturing of SH-SY5Y Cells - (Jul/02/2012 )
Hi everyone.
I was hoping to begin some experiments with the SH-SY5Y cell line. It is used pretty frequently in my lab, but nobody ever keeps a culture going for more than a couple of weeks. I am interested in neurite sprouting, so I was wondering if anyone had some tips on how to culture these cells for at least a month? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks!

There shouldn't be any major differences in how the cells are handled if kept in culture for longer duration. Just make sure they don't get too confluent, and keep track of how many passages the cells have gone through. Most cells will begin to go into senescence after too many passages, at which point you'll want to thaw a new stock.
