Brilliant Green Agar- Salmonella isolation tips? - (Mar/28/2011 )
I'm attempting to isolate Salmonella from poultry sources. I am enriching samples in Rappaport-Vassiliadis (RV) broth or Universal Preerichment broth, then further selecting on Brilliant Green Agar. All of these should be selecting against any gram positive organisms also present. I've got a very interesting wrinkled colony phenotype on my Brilliant Green Agar that I believe is gram positive based on further culturing on EMB/MacConkey plates. Does anyone have expertise or knowledge of Brilliant Green or gram positive isolates that I might be picking up from poultry sources? I am not trying to quantify the Salmonella, just looking for presence or absence.
Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Preston
Some mycobacteria grow on these media - relevant to your observation, avium on Brilliant green.
