cDNA synthesis - (Jan/04/2011 )
Hi
I have a Invitrogen's "SuperScript® III First-Strand Synthesis System" kit used only once but is 2 years old. Is it wise to use it for cDNA synthesis now? The kit literature says "Guaranteed stable for 6 months when properly stored". It hasnt gone through any freeze thaw cycles. Just wondering if anyone has used an expired kit and still got results??? Its an expensive kit. So just want to make sure before buying a new one!

The general rule is "when in doubt, throw it out" - even if it does work, how do you know that it is transcribing the cDNA effieciently which is very important if you are planning on doing any real-time PCR (q-PCR).

If it was properly stored at -20 I'd check if it still works and I'd use it.
