Viruses and plasmid gaining resistance toward drugs can lead to speciatio - (Dec/25/2010 )
Virus/bacteria gaining drug resistance is considered evolution or not?? Can it lead to speciation (I am not sure whether virus is classified into species)?

bacteria get drug resistance genes and its part of evolution. May be in a few million years there might be newer sub species of bacteria based on drug resistance.

Sub species but not species? What bout virus? New variant but essentially still the same?

for bacteria I would go with sub species. This is just me, I could be totally off track.
Viruses- i have not heard of antibiotic resistance in viruses. Also one doesnot treat viral infections with antibiotics, might have to do something with evolution. If they were suceptible, they would also acquitre the gene.
