Choosing the right clean hood - (Aug/04/2010 )
We recently received new funding for our algal biofuel research and would like to get away from huddling around a torch like cavemen while we do our procedures. What type of aseptic flow hood would you guys recommend we purchase for our lab? Is a PCR benchtop workstation suitable, with its flow directed mainly downward over the workspace? Would a hood with horizontal flow be better for our purpose? Does anyone who works with algae have a specific hood they believe works well? Thanks!
It would depend what the purpose of the hood was? If you are looking for something to protect your samples from outside contamination then a laminar flow with the flow horizontal, or a re-circulating hood like is used for cell culture will be the best choices. If you are looking to protect yourself as well, the second option above is the best one.

Cheers, we don't work with anything toxic so it sounds like the horizontal flow hood would be best (and probably cheaper than the re-circulating hood).
