Quantity of DNA - (May/26/2010 )

Dear fellows
I have one little strange question.
I have some liver biopsy samples of size approx 3 cm in length and 1-1.4 mm in width. How much quantity of DNA I can expect to isolate from them using a good kit and with maximum care?

Which kit/method do you plan to use?

The best approximation for yield would be based on the mass of the tissue sample. For example, the Qiagen DNeasy manual suggests you would get around 10-30 ug of DNA from 25 mg of liver tissue.

I have invitrogen's purelink genomic DNA. I do not know the weight of tissue but its size is around 3 cm in length and approx 1 cm in width

The yield should be in the same order of magnitude with the Purelink kit. The tissue should be easy enough to weigh - just tare first with whatever tube or container you're using. I don't know how dense liver is so the dimensions aren't that useful. Perhaps someone who has extracted from liver could be of more help.
