membrane type of cell culture filtration - (Jan/05/2010 )

there are different kinds of membranes in 0.2 micrometer syringe filters, which one is recommanded for filterind cell culture solutions and media?

Sara... use one with a low protein binding capability - you don't want to remove the precious proteins and amino-acids from your medium.

We generally use Cellulose Acetate memrane filters. As bob1 correctly states, any membrane that has low protein binding, as you do not want to lose precious growth factors.

I do however find it strange that when media, FCS, PEN/STEP, NEAA etc all come sterile...why would you want to filter it.

If you are adding drugs/compounds into your TC media, I have always found it best to make them up in a concentrated solution....then filter sterilise that.
