Taxonomic diarrhea - (Jun/09/2008 )

Pages: 1 2 Next

Again I discover some lab clown prying (imagining) a new species from long and well known taxonomic entities. Perhaps one day every isolate will have its own species names - and every microbiologist will be able to name one after his mother.

Jorge,

even when I agree with you that the "species explosion" at the moment is sometimes ridiculous, you are referring to one of the biggest dilemmas in taxonomy of microorganisms:

What is a "species"? When are you talking of a "strain"; what is a "f.sp." an isolate....

There are lots of concepts, but which one is the one valid for this species? How many independent features do you need to clearly set your species apart from the rest? And which features are independent? e.g. are colony color and spore size independent or interlinked genetically?
The ID and description of new species is always linked with the concept applied for this special group of microorganisms. And if a species fulfills these criteria you can publish it and give it a name; so if this species was published, it seems to be different enough to get its separate place in the tree of life!

And to add to the discussion on names for new taxonomic entities: I think there was some kind of worm or beetle named after G.W.Bush some years ago????
