waiting 4 months for an strain...... - How can we compete with 1rs word!!!!??? (Jan/11/2008 )
We need an specific E. coli strain, so we asked a brand distributor in Mexico, they’ll give us the product in 4 months at least… 4 months….. can you believe it!!!!!!!!!!!??
We asked directly the original supplier‘s brand in Canada and they’ll send it tomorrow if we pay today….. Of course, first I have to ask if there is not duty problems.
But I can believe it!!!…. How can we compete with 1rs word’s countries if we need to wait months for something here meanwhile you can acquire next day you ask for it there!!!!
And of course, paying twice.
This is really sad. But as it is in all other places, science is governed by money.
I assure I can understand your point. I'm not in a big lab, and we do not have sufficient funding for our ideas (we do have some, don't get me wrong.. but we could surely use more!). You have to accept it
You can ask your friends, either here or elsewhere to send you strains. BSL-1 strains are pretty easy to send. It's the pathogens that get hard or impossible.
hello princess,
are there no other suppliers for the strain you need? it might be not as easy as just paying and getting it back next day, it has to go through customs. we have had some problems when we order things from other countries, specifically a RNA extraction kit, the enzymes were ruined by the time we got it because they kept it for 1 week but forgot to put it in the freezer...

since it is "biological material" that you're asking for...hmmm, it would be good for you to check if it won't get stopped or have to pay extra.

Annoy them again and again and again. "Where are my cells?". Every day.
Better still, tell their sales manager that you'll tell all of your colleagues to stop using their products unless you get a better response. And tell the Canadian company that the Mexican distributor is damaging their reputation.
hey princess,
what E. coli strain do you need? it is even possible some people have it here at my institute. since it is a public institution it should be not too complicated to talk to the person in charge instead of waiting 4 months. who is your supplier? i hope there is no problem about putting supplier names...the longest we had to wait was 4 weeks but that was because the product came from lituania or some country at the other side of the world. anyway, we're not too far. good luck

Thank you!!!
We need BJ5183 cells (a recombination proficient bacterial strain) from MP Biomedic.
The main problem is to introduce that kind of stuffs to the country. they’re retained in the duty. That’s why they have to be acquired by a local distributor.

I presume that means your institution is not able to obtain the required license to import.
I'd go back to complaining to the Canadian company about the lousy service you're currently getting.
hey princess,
sorry, no good luck
the people i asked are working on bacillus and psedomonas mainly, hope you can get your strain soon.
