*holidays! BUT....we are in the lab* - you are not alone! (Dec/27/2006 )
not that im feeling lonely, I do have two guys who beg me not to go to work (each one for different reason of course , but i thought it would be nice that we make our *super-nurd* community who work all the holidays.
speaking frankly i dont excatly know what will I be doing since i just finished my manuscript yesterday and my ligations are still not working. that means i have to talk to PI about that who is on vacation.
so what are your reasons to stay at the lab? My main reason is that if i take a long holiday my 2 year old son will get used to it and wont let me go to work after that and of course i do have work to do, cause i have to finish everything by march next year. and.....
I ADORE working on holidays cause it is super calm and noone to asks or distracts me I can use lab computer as much as I want and leave my labtop at home.
so what about you?
I dont know why I am here today. I have absolutely no work but yes heard in the afternoon whole dept is sitting together for lunch and later we have mochitsuki. May be for that.
Yesterday, I had a gel to run for a fren so I was there.
Tomorrow.. I dunno why should I come.
Sit here, read papers, see what is in Bioforum, etc etc ,
.. . . if I don't come tomorrow may mean I choked on mochi, hehe
yep, I'm working too, I even worked on Christmas (just for a short digest and screening though) But I like working on holidays too cause this is the time when it is nice and quiet and the cell culture hood is always free. That's why I like working early mornings too, cause it's quieter and I try to tell myself that it means leaving earlier (though this part never seems to work out)
And besides that: it gives me the feeling of being a super nerd
same here, i also worked last christmas and would intend to do that again this new year...
its really nice working on a holiday ( No PI's, No Labmates, No one except me)
what is holiday? how do u eat it?
I like working during holidays too, nice and quiet, fewer people to bug you. The only problem is if your workplace is "closed" or "no services provided" That means, no janitor to take trash out or put new toilet paper in bathroom, FedEx not delivering packages to you even though your department is open. For past 2 days, I've been banging my head against wall, waiting for antibody but FedEx keeps on coming before 9am and we keep on telling them to come between 9am and 3pm during this holiday season. Grr!
Well, everything would be great in holidays if my PI weren't here . I mean, the nice part of being a super nerd -as you already said- is that you can work with no one to bug you, with the whole lab only for you, but with my advisor here I feel like a slave
. I think it's a psychological matter, although I prefer no one in lab
. Just my mice
Anyway, HNY to all bioforumers !!! . Best wishes
Happy New Year to ALLLLLL!!!!! May this year bring all al the best ever!!! and many many7 many many new papers!!! and only one to me
all the services provided here. this is the nice thing about studying in Japan. even the cafeteria is working i guess.

Not such a nice day today. professor returned my manuscript all in red

holidays were introduced to save the power and vitality of hard working people such as in lead or coal mines; for charismatic and creative professions it is sometimes useful to take a break to get new ideas and insights; a scientist should only take holiday if he/she is at this point;
saving vitality so as to better work in the nut mines? Or getting new ideas and insights?
I am in sore need of both.
Thus I took the holidays off

So I can spend all of today counting tens of thousands of yeast colonies with saved up vitality... although no new insight has yet to come.
