exposur of uv light - on aluminium foil (Apr/14/2009 )
i want to expose my autoclave water to uv. water is in flask, cover with aluminium foil. can i place it in uv light .
means, would it be safe?
Yeah
It should be okay.

I'm not sure I understand what you want to do.
Do you want to irradiate the water? It won't be efficient
Do you want to irradiate the surface of the bottle? yes, it's safe.

I think he means this:
He has autoclaved some water and wants to put this water in little flasks, wrapped around with aluminium foil to prevent light damage (I do wonder why he would do this if it simply water?)
If this is what he means, then its indeed safe like T.C. said.
i think what chicken means is that he(she?) has a flask of water capped with aluminum foil and wants to irradiate with uv as do some di systems.
uv will be reflected by the foil but should not cause any problems (like microwaving would).
glass will block some or all of the uv. so, while there is no problem there may also be no benefit.
Agree - what's the benefit or effect you want to establish, chicken?
i am some what over concious. i am going to make media for cell culture. i will use that water, i just want to expose it with uv.so that any microbe would be kill.
and flask is not fully coverd with aluminium foil. just its mouth is covered.
thanks for all replies.
UV will only decontaminate the surface, not the water.
The best way to sterilize your water is to autoclave it.

thank u.
i have autoclaved it twice
Ah, you just want to sterilize it.
Autoclaving is the easiest way to do this and for cell culture that's fine.
UV'ing is a problem as, although short wavelength UV will penetrate glass and water, it is very difficult to gauge how effective it's going to be. My supposition was that you were trying to remove nucleic acids for some reason but you're not (again, UV'ing would be an issue with medium volumes of water).
Autoclaving once will be fine.
