Protein sequence conservation - (Jun/07/2013 )

What is generally regarded as highly conserved protein sequence?..Percentage wise

I was looking at of the same proteins form different species and the alignment score comes in at 76%.

I think it depends on what species you are comparing. If these proteins are 76% identical between humans, e coli, frog and some archaea, then yes, that is a highly conserved protein. If the comparisons are between humans, chimps and orangutans, then that's probably a relatively divergent protein. In general though, yes, 76% conserved is a pretty well conserved protein.

Thanks, I had a presentation to give and I need the answer incase I was asked that question!
