Alternative to Sybr-green? - (Nov/03/2011 )
Hi,
Does anyone have any advice/experience/recommendations for an alternative to Sybr-green master mix? I'm getting a little annoyed with the price that SAB Biosciences are charging and was wondering if other people/labs had found cheaper alternatives for either sybr-green or at least suppliers of sybr-green?
Cheers,
Steve
Well, how much do you pay for your master mix?
Maybe it's worth trying to order bulk amounts together with other departments to get a higher discount?
Promega recently launched qPCR mastermixes with a new dye we developed. Note that we list the various sizes by the number of reactions that can be performed with the product and we use a 50ul reaction size.
Hope this his useful.
Kevin
I've had great luck with the Roche master mix, and it is the least expensive one we can buy here. It is also possible to make your own master mix for a significant savings.

Just curious, how much you purchased?
I'm in Europe and our Institut has a "store" with certain items that they keep in stock. It costs us 110 euros for 5mL. If you want the recipe to make your own master mix email me: doxorubicin2001@yahoo.com

Have you checked SsoFast™ EvaGreen® Supermix from Bio-Rad?

We also use the Roche master mix.
Thanks for the replies, I'll look into the bio-rad product. I have spoken to Roche about their mastermix, but unfortunately they are not willing to supply a small sample to validate against our system and previous results. Since I already have a bunch of results using the SABiosciences product I'm not willing to pay more money for a different product only to find it introduces more variability to those results. Once I've finished my current work though I think I'll try Roche.
Here they have a small sample you can purchase for 1 euro.......
