How to store wet dialysis membranes once opened? - (Apr/28/2010 )

Hello there,

ive bought a wet dialysis membrane and I was wondering what to do with it once openened? I only need a piece at a time and I guess it has to stay wet. Shall I put it in a becker with water and keep it in the fridge? Sorry for the silly question but its expensive and I dont want to damage it!

thanks!!

If the Dialysis tubing you purchased came dry, say in a roll, it can be left that way indefinetely. When I Dialyse Foetal Calf Serum, I cut a piece of tubing to a desired amount, then hydrate it overnight in Sterile Distilled water. Normally I do not store Dialysis tubing in Distilled Water, as I only cut off the desired amount.

Hope this answers your question

You may store wet dialysis membrane (tubing) in distilled water with some antibacterial agent eg. sodium azide or merthiolate (some manufacturers recommend ethanol).

I rehydrate dialysis tubing for 15-30 minutes in hot water (80-100 degrees C).

Kathon is also an excellent low-toxicity preservative for items such as this.

Thanks guys!

In the end I took it out of the bag and poured the sodium azide in a becker that was just wide enough for the roll. Then added a bit more water so it would all be covered, wrapped it with parafilm and put in the fridge.

Used it yesterday and it worked great!
